COLLABORATORS
Incubator space for startup companies, London. The Incubator is conceived as a new typology of workspace: a vertical landscape where collaboration, contemplation, and production coexist. Far from the conventional office model, the project proposes an architectural ecosystem that encourages interaction while accommodating diverse modes of working, from focused individual tasks to informal encounters and public events.
At the heart of the proposal is a dramatic central void, animated by a sculptural helical staircase that orchestrates movement between levels. This vertical spine is more than a circulation element; it acts as a social condenser, connecting programs and fostering visual permeability. The stair’s cantilevered concrete treads and slender steel balustrade create a sense of lightness despite its monumental scale, framing a sequence of suspended pathways and hanging gardens.
Materiality is deliberately crafted to balance solidity with softness. The primary structure and large surfaces are defined by mineral finishes, polished concrete floors, textured plaster walls, and grid-formed ceilings that diffuse light and establish geometric order. These raw materials are counterbalanced by a lush layer of integrated vegetation, with cascading greenery softening the edges of the atrium and forming intimate pockets for rest or dialogue. Planting is treated as infrastructure: it regulates microclimates, absorbs sound, and introduces a biophilic presence essential to wellbeing. The ground floor operates as a civic gateway, centered around a circular tiled café bar that anchors the social life of the building. Its glazed ceramic modules and minimal metal stools set the tone for a space that is tactile, durable, and inviting. Adjacent stepped seating doubles as an amphitheater for talks, screenings, and informal gatherings. Generous glazing floods the atrium with natural light, enhancing the continuity between interior activity and the surrounding city. On the upper levels, workspaces unfold as open-plan platforms bordered by translucent meeting rooms wrapped in colorful curtains and glass partitions. This creates a subtle gradient of privacy and acoustic performance, enabling different working atmospheres within a cohesive visual identity. A large central lightwell brings daylight deep into the floorplate, illuminating a cylindrical interior garden that anchors the plan and distributes soft, diffused light across shared tables and collaboration zones.
Throughout, the project prioritizes modularity and adaptability. Furniture, partitions, and lighting systems are designed to be reconfigured as teams expand, projects evolve, or new technologies emerge. The architecture supports long-term resilience by integrating flexible infrastructures into a clear and legible spatial framework. The Incubator demonstrates how workplace architecture can transcend utility to become a cultural and ecological platform, one that nurtures innovation not only through programmatic efficiency, but through the quality of the spaces where people meet, exchange ideas, and work together. It stands as an immersive environment where material precision, spatial generosity, and natural elements converge to cultivate the future of urban creativity.
