Open style loft with a nice castellated metal beam. This interior renovation in Barcelona reinterprets a traditional apartment through a contemporary lens, using material precision and spatial transparency to maximize light and continuity. The project preserves the original character of the dwelling, most notably its timber beams, while introducing a new architectural layer that reorganizes the domestic program with minimal means. The intervention revolves around a central, permeable partition that subtly divides the living space from the bedroom. Constructed from a lightweight white metal frame and micro-perforated panels, this filter maintains visual depth and allows natural light to migrate throughout the home. Rather than creating closed rooms, the partition defines atmospheres, ensuring privacy without sacrificing openness. A sequence of interconnected spaces, kitchen, dining, living room, and sleeping area, unfolds along a continuous visual axis. The resulting plan enhances flexibility, amplifies perceived dimensions, and supports a calm, uncluttered domestic environment.
A restrained selection of materials defines the project’s identity: Restored wooden beams run above the main living spaces, exposing the structural memory of the original building. Their natural patina contrasts with the precise geometries of the new intervention. Custom hexagonal ceiling modules, inserted between the beams, integrate lighting and emphasize the room’s longitudinal direction. Their faceted geometry introduces a subtle rhythm and a crafted, architectural detail. Micro-perforated steel partitions, finished in matte white, act simultaneously as enclosure, filter, and diffuser. Their translucency contributes to the soft, evenly distributed light that characterizes the home.
Continuous microcement flooring in circulation and kitchen areas supports visual unity and is paired with warm oak parquet in the living and bedroom zones to differentiate uses with a tactile transition. Neutral ceramic tiling in the bathroom and kitchen provides a clean, durable backdrop, reinforcing the project’s overall sobriety and functional clarity. Artificial lighting is fully integrated into architectural elements. Linear LEDs embedded in the ceiling modules soften shadows and highlight material textures, while discreet wall fixtures complement natural light from the façade openings. The lighting strategy avoids visual clutter, enhancing the spatial purity of the renovation.
The interior is completed with a selection of understated, lightweight furnishings in natural textures, woven rugs, timber tables, textile pendants, that reinforce the calm, neutral palette. The overall ambience is serene and luminous, allowing the architectural elements to define the character of the home. The project balances respect for the existing structure with a clear contemporary expression. By revealing the wooden beams, introducing crafted geometries, and using permeable partitions, the renovation transforms a once compartmentalized apartment into a fluid, cohesive, and materially coherent domestic space.
