This renovation project in front of Ciutadella Park in Barcelona, redefines a mid-century apartment by establishing a clear architectural order grounded in material coherence and refined detailing. The intervention focuses on creating continuous, luminous spaces that balance the existing structural character with a new palette defined by warm timber, mineral surfaces, and subtle chromatic accents. At the core of the project lies the dialogue between two primary materials: dark terrazzo flooring and natural oak carpentry. The terrazzo, with its deep tone and reflective quality, becomes a base that anchors the entire home, imparting a sense of solidity and permanence. Its polished surface captures light from the generous windows, transforming the living areas into bright, fluid rooms that shift throughout the day.

The timber elements introduce warmth and precision. Oak is used to frame portals, define thresholds, and articulate custom-made cabinetry. These vertical accents contrast with the floor’s weight and guide movement through the apartment, turning passages into architectural moments. The kitchen amplifies this strategy: a composition of oak joinery, soft blue glass panels, and white countertops creates a balanced, contemporary ensemble that integrates seamlessly with the open living space.

The project’s bathrooms explore another layer of materiality, each defined by a monolithic use of microcement in distinct tones. A muted green and a soft grey envelope the walls, floors, and ceilings, producing intimate, tactile spaces where light is diffused and the perception of volume becomes softer and more sculptural. Floating wooden vanities and minimal fixtures complement this calm, continuous treatment. Throughout the apartment, white walls and carefully controlled openings create a neutral background against which materials can speak. Existing structural elements, such as exposed concrete, are preserved where appropriate, adding depth and authenticity to the architectural narrative.

The resulting home is a study in contrasts calibrated with care: warm and cool, reflective and matte, solid and light. By orchestrating these elements with precision, the project achieves a contemporary domesticity rooted in material integrity and spatial clarity, a home that feels both renewed and timeless.
