Conservation of a nineteen century three floor building fitted with five apartments and three commercials, Hospitalet. This intervention in the historic centre of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat combines the rehabilitation of a corner building’s façade with the complete renovation of one of its residential units, restoring its architectural identity while adapting it to contemporary standards of comfort. The project begins with a careful reading of the existing structure, revealing the Catalan vaults, steel beams, brickwork, and original carpentry that give the dwelling its character. These elements, once covered or fragmented by successive alterations, now re-emerge as the protagonists of the interior, shaping a living space built on the dialogue between heritage and modernity.
Inside the apartment, the vaulted ceramic ceilings are exposed and reinforced, their rhythm subtly emphasized by newly painted steel beams that frame the space. The flooring is resolved with continuous oak surfaces that bring material warmth and unify the domestic program, while the new kitchen and storage volumes are designed as clean, white insertions that contrast with, and simultaneously highlight, the more expressive textures of the existing structure. The restored wooden doors, with their textured glass panels, mediate between rooms and echo the building’s early 20th-century spirit, adding depth and a crafted dimension to the renovation. Natural light becomes a defining element of the interior atmosphere. Enlarged window openings and slender dark frames sharpen the visual connection with the urban surroundings and allow daylight to graze the brick, wood, and plaster surfaces. The intervention on the building’s exterior preserves its original chromatic composition while restoring its ornamental details, including the stuccoed botanical motifs and the distinctive circular ventilation elements. The façade is treated with breathable mineral mortars that respect the building’s material logic, and the iron railings are repaired and repainted to recover their geometric pattern and delicate profile.
The result is a renovation that works at two complementary scales: the urban scale, where the restored façade reintegrates the building into the memory of the neighbourhood; and the domestic scale, where the careful selection of materials and the exposure of structural elements generate a warm, open, and coherent interior. By combining preservation with a restrained contemporary approach, the project restores the integrity of the original architecture while offering a comfortable and refined home aligned with present-day living.
