This project involves the comprehensive renovation of a large historic apartment located in the heart of Barcelona’s Gòtic Quarter. The dwelling, rich in original architectural elements and spatial generosity, becomes the framework for an intervention that seeks to preserve character while introducing contemporary comfort and clarity. The design approach is based on respectful coexistence between old and new. Rather than neutralizing the weight of history, the project embraces it. Original carpentry, tall proportions, deep window reveals, and classical moldings are preserved and restored wherever possible. These elements provide identity, atmosphere, and a direct connection to the apartment’s past.

Within this historic envelope, the new intervention is deliberately precise and restrained. Contemporary elements such as the kitchen, bathrooms, and lighting are conceived as clean insertions, defined by smooth surfaces, minimal detailing, and controlled geometry. This contrast allows the original features to remain legible, while ensuring the apartment responds to contemporary living standards. The main living spaces are organized as open, luminous rooms connected to the façade through restored wooden balconies. Natural light becomes a key architectural material, emphasizing the generous ceiling heights and enhancing the perception of depth. The kitchen is integrated into the central living area through a calm, white composition that reads as a functional object within a larger historic room rather than as a dominant architectural gesture.

Material choices reinforce this dialogue between epochs. Continuous light flooring, white lacquered joinery, and subtle stone surfaces establish a neutral base, while existing timber doors, original openings, and inherited textures introduce warmth and complexity. Furniture and lighting are selected as part of the architectural composition, contributing to a domestic atmosphere that is both contemporary and rooted in place. Private spaces, such as the suite, are conceived as quiet, intimate environments, where the scale of the original architecture is softened through textiles, controlled lighting, and carefully framed views. Bathrooms are treated as sculptural, minimal rooms: stone surfaces, integrated fixtures, and soft indirect light create spaces of calm within the historic envelope.

The project does not seek to reconstruct a past image, nor to impose a radical contemporary language. Instead, it proposes a balanced renovation strategy, where history remains visible and active, and where new interventions are measured, timeless, and respectful. The result is a renewed apartment that preserves the spirit of the Gòtic Quarter while offering a refined, contemporary way of living, an architecture of continuity, precision, and quiet transformation.
